The Making of Kin

We wanted to take a little moment to tell you how this campaign came to be;

Earlier this year, we were selected into Ireland Fashion Week. It opened the door to a community of people championing Irish creativity and, in turn, led us to Two Shores, an evening celebrating creativity, community and the connection between Ireland and Scotland. Looking back, it feels like one of those evenings we were always meant to find ourselves at and, it’s where we met Saoirse.

We'd be lying if we said we weren't beside ourselves at first, but the conversation was easy. There was a lot of laughing, and by the end of the evening it felt like we'd known each other much longer than a couple of hours. The following day, she arrived at the Ireland vs Scotland ladies rugby match at the Aviva wearing our Harvest coat, and we picked up exactly where we'd left off. We can now call it a friendship that felt familiar from the very beginning. Saoirse described it as kismet, and we don't think there's a better word for it.

Around the same time, we'd been quietly working away on our next mini collection. We called it kin. A word that means family, but to us had grown to mean something much bigger. The people who become family and the places that feel like home.

One of our favourite pieces from the collection is the Wild T-Shirt. It features Scotland's national animal, the unicorn, on the front, and Samhradh 26 (Gaelic for summer) across the back. A year ago, Olivia would've been pitching unicorns, folklore and a healthy dose of whimsy, while Kaitlyn would've politely suggested something a little more sensible. Somewhere along the way, Alba seems to have worked its magic on her, and this piece was totally her design. Olivia’s delighted.

When Saoirse mentioned that her cousin Elsa was beginning her modelling career, everything suddenly felt as though it had landed exactly where it was meant to. We had a collection about kinship and suddenly, it was going to be photographed on two cousins.

It wasn't until the shoot was over that we realised everyone involved represented a different kind of kin. Family by blood, family by friendship, family by creativity and family by place.

We started the morning at Limepark, transforming the old stone barn into an artist's gallery alongside the beautiful work of local artist Maurice Orr. Many of Maurice's paintings are inspired by the very coastline we were about to head towards for the second half of the day at Murlough Bay, making the whole shoot feel deeply rooted in the landscape around us. Murlough Bay is one of those places that's impossible for us to separate from home. Olivia grew up camping beside the bothy, spending summers at her family's cottage there and having barbecues overlooking the bay. It's completely off-grid, no signal and you have the waves to thank for the best night's sleep of your life. On a clear day, Kaitlyn’s homeland Scotland quietly waves back across the water (how perfect?).

The campaign day itself was everything we hope our shoots will always be: calm, fun, collaborative and full of people looking after one another. As always, Celtic hospitality wins!

Elsa and Saoirse were absolute joys to work with, making our job incredibly easy. Saoirse's mum, Ruth, became part of the crew before lunch. With us (as we hope you know now) music was of course a part of the day, and by the evening we were all gathered around a table for dinner before ending the night listening to live music in one of our favourite local pubs. A little shout-out to the lads in Wee Tom's for playing one of Elsa's favourites by Zach Bryan.

The Sixth Language has introduced us to people we never imagined we'd meet. The clothes are the reason we cross paths, looking back, kin might only be a three-piece collection, but it somehow became one of the biggest chapters in our story so far. Seeing it photographed alongside our previous collections is such a joy.

We really hope you love kin as much as we loved making it xx
